It hurt too. I know the church here never had any pot luck dinners, or anything like that, they had a dinner during the winter when they wanted 24 dollars a person, we never could afford that. Yes we were made to feel inferior. They always asked my husband where he worked and because he did not have a normal job, there was a lot of looks down noses. I am glad you found some place that helps with and does not judge on poverty. I think the evangelical world is a mess too. It's going to be interesting because the majority of Gen X is not going to church and the millennials want nothing to do with it. I read somewhere else that she glorified suffering and poverty and that her worldview was "medieval." Not that most people will believe it since everyone loves the idea of a saintly saint. Kind of like how everyone loves the idea of the saintly mother, but about a millionfold more. The covenant described in Jeremiah 31:33-34 is taking shape and God is slowly doing away with organized religion and writing his law in the hearts of the younger generations. It, however, is a slow process and there are a lot of mean people out there right now who are getting more attention. Remember, Jesus was not exactly accepted by the religious leaders of our day. I tried to for many years. The last one I went to made me feel so ill that I ended up leaving half way through the service.
We went to a fairly large evangelical church years ago where they had women's retreats that cost almost $200 for the weekend! There was no way a low-income woman could afford to go (including me). I felt too ashamed to tell them that I couldn't afford to go. Pretty much everything they did involved money for something.
Another church we went to had a Valentines banquet that cost around $50 for a couple! I think that is just insane! When you met people at those churches they always want to know what you do for a living and what college you graduated from etc. I always ended up feeling sort of inferior.
We go to a very tiny messianic congregation now and it's a lot better. They give money to help people in the community and don't care whether you're well off or not. The evangelical world is sort of a mess right now I think. It seems like many people are very disillusioned with it. Status really counts for the most among this false Christian set. I think with ACONS you are right there is that ever present feeling of not fitting in and it can be worse in the evangelical church world since it is so family oriented. I noticed people boasted of families in a way that was way over the top. Thanks regarding my beliefs, I do think I follow a whole other "religion" in many ways then they do. I do feel better away from them and their judgments. My husband has done better too, he didn't need put downs from the pulpit every other minute for not having a "regular" high paying job. I know there are many young people and others who have left the churches and the evangelical churches have become echo chambers of conforming Republicans and people who are of certain socioeconomic means.
