Physical Education in the 1960s

Look how much thinner everyone is, even the boys. Look how muscular they are. The other day and I know this is NOT politically correct, I told my husband, "Why do so many young men all seem overweight or very very thin with no muscle structure?" They don't look the same as they used to when I was young.

As I have said, people even the "thin" ones have changed in body shape and stature. People while they are of average or midsized their bodies just do not seem to be shaped the same way as people used to be. The bad food, additives and more are destroying people's health. While the world focuses on weight, there are OTHER health things to be observed.  Now consider this, teens in the 1960s ate cheeseburgers, French fries and milk shakes and smoked too. They weren't all doing Jenny Craig and eating lettuce leafs.

If a gym teacher asked a bunch of teens even of thin weights to do these exercises now, how many would be able to do it? This is one thing that always bugs me, I think about when I was young and still had some vigor, and LOVED to ride my bicycle and hike in the woods for miles, and still my body went so wrong. Health is something people enjoyed for eons and people today just aren't as healthy as they were even when I was young. People are getting more autoimmune and other disorders even if they don't become dreaded fat people.

Speaking of physical education, I do wish there was somewhere I could go to exercise and lift weights where I could afford it. If this society cares so much about fat people getting healthier, provide us some gyms to go to. If we are medically fragile like I am, provide us a place. Physical therapy did help me live longer and draw back from the 2008, you almost need to go on oxygen brink. I do wish there had been intervention for me when I had those early breathing problems and more that destroyed exercise for me. If I won the Lotto, even this messed up, I'd hire a trainer and join a decent gym tomorrow.

  1. I can't do any weights as my shoulders and hips are wrecked. I wish I could. They should have free gyms.
The only good thing for me is I was born kind of muscular. My oldest sister is like this too even though she never exercises. My other sister has no muscle mass. A lot of genetics are at play with our bodies as well as environmental.

    1. I used to walk for miles in college but I would get all broken down and in pain and swollen and remember in 1988 wondering why exercise wasn't making me stronger? I have an elevator phobia and lived on the 6th floor in the dorm which means stairs, stairs, stairs, so why no weight loss and benefits from this exercise that was constant? Sorry you can't do weights but glad you have some muscle mass. Why does someone have to be middle class or above to afford a gym. I agree they should have free gyms or some provisions for poor people. I don't want to hear all the whining about the obesity epidemic when so many are priced out of the gyms.

  2. I have an elevator phobia too. I freaked out in one in a skyscraper once.
I used to be a long distance runner. I actually don't think that kind of exercise is healthy anymore. I did love the runners high though.I constantly run up and down the stairs in my house just to get anything. Plus my pump is going so it takes a bunch of extra trips to do the wash.I say the same thing to my husband. Why don't I lose any weight going up and down these stairs.
It's good you feel motivated to go to a gym. I have no desire. I do feel the need to stretch more because of joint problems but even that is risky for me.
Can the middle class even afford a gym these days? I think the above middle class probably go to a spa!

    1. I avoid elevators like the plague, sometimes I get forced to use them at a medical center but I otherwise avoid them. Glad you liked running. Do you think it affected you negatively? Yes all those stairs should take off weight. I am probably too sick for a gym, all the housebound stuff. I wouldn't mind going on rare occasion to do weights but I would be STARED at. If I was treated bad at 300lbs how would it be now? I can't exercise like normal people, but yeah it's not easy stuff. Hmm with all the bills the middle class probably has no money left for a gym. I was watching the Sharks Tank on TV wondering who had money for all these goofy products anymore.

  3. I don't know if running affected me personally badly. But they have done studies where they concluded too much excercise can actually harm you.
I did have an autoimmune problem already starting around that time. I know runners who are still healthy in their sixties but it's rare. If I had to do it over again I might not. Boy the things I wish I could go back and do over. Why aren't there do overs!Like in games. Shows life isn't a game so people shouldn't treat it that way.

    1. They are saying too exercise won't take weight off, so what do people do now? Since the dieting and rest is failing. I wish I had more money to do things. I'd be walking at the nature center today with a few dollars but we had to get a car repair done that cleaned us out. Sorry you got an autoimmune problem. Everyone thinks of that famous runner who had a massive heart attack at a young age, I can't think of his name. The knees go out too. Yes I wish I could relive my life, I'd be wrapping my legs at age 12 and escaping and disappearing from the FOO at age 4 or 5 whenever I could walk or talk, and taking the foster care roulette. I once asked God for a do over for another life, I can see why reincarnation is so attractive to people as a belief. It's not good to be almost 50 and thinking "My life turned out bad" with exception of the marriage. Even too many of my friends died. :(

  4. The nature center cost money to walk around. Do you have a local library that might have free passes.
It's weird, I so hate exercise now, when I used to be such an athlete..
Yeah I don't think God is giving any do over's. I don't think people think out the reincarnation thing. It sounds horrible to me..
I would have left my Foo the day I graduated high school if I knew what I know now. It's so bad that the information wasn't out there. It shows how behind the therapy community was. They talked about abuse but not Acons and nar parents. My first therapist taught family systems, and he never said a word about it. It baffles me to this day.
I paid for a lot of my college anyway. I don't think I would have survived before that. Unless I got lucky with really good foster care. My brother got taken from our home for a while in high school. But, my father had already screwed him up too much.
Jim Fixx. But I think marathons and triathlons can create autoimmune problems in some people. Our bodies aren't made to be pushed like that. It can be challenging and seem fun for a while but will catch up to lots of people with injuries and other consequences. I don't know if this is sound science but it is being talked about and noticed.
I am also around 50 and thinking my life turned out bad.
I wish you had had an earlier diagnosis.I am sorry you didn't. It pisses me off at the medical establishment that makes so much money of of people like us. I got sicker from delayed diagnosis. It does make everything worse.

    1. Well I should be able to go to the nature center later this week, I'm hoping so. I do hang out at the library a lot when I'm not housebound but I have a book deliverer during the months I am. Sorry you hate exercise now. I think the feel the pain and burn people who think you can beat the human body into submission are all insane. It's like the extreme diet queens, everyone can be thin if they just starve themselves enough. I didn't sleep long enough and had a higher blood sugar. My body seems to love being "lazy", when I slept 9 hours yesterday I had a perfect blood sugar.

Yeah I don't think there will be do-overs. I would want one with a different body I guess.

I would have left the FOO even earlier, or run away too. I wasted decades letting these people tear me down. Even 20 years of low contact was too much contact and on message boards for ACONs I warn against LC as a solution. Younger people will benefit from the information being out there. I see 20 year olds escaping on ACON boards and their futures will be far more bright then ours were. Even the therapists told me to reconcile. I wrote about that a long time ago

They told me to forgive the abuse and to let bygones be bygones. So I am baffled same as you.

I would have taken the foster care roulette over what my family did to me.

Ah yes it was Jim Fixx. I don't think triatholons and the rest are healthy either. I am glad some are noticing the dangers of over-exercise.

Yes being near 50 and realizing my life turned out this way is tough. I am sorry you are facing the same thing. Yes Lipedema has destroyed my life too but if was caught at stage 1 [even many of the endocrine problems earlier on] life would have gone far different. I know with Aspergers they weren't figuring things out until the 1980s and 1990s especially with girls so I slide right through the cracks. I know other Aspies my age who slid through and didn't get good careers and more.

    2. sorry you had delayed diagnosis too. Doctors don't diagnose anymore and I am unsure why, it is getting to be a serious problem. I thought it used to just be me, because I was fat and the fat bigotry blinded them but a lot of thin and average weight people got medical problems that were just as ignored.

  5. I wasn't overweight when I was first ill and I was told I was just depressed. I had a steady fever for 9 months straight and a host of other obvious symptoms. I think the doctors were insane or something. I had a life and they think I just suddenly wanted to give it up and just sit around in pain. That's insane.
I did have this one doctor that thought I had luekemia but then soon after retracted it. He came back after he did a blood test on me and had this terrified look in his eyes, but told me there was nothing wrong.. It was really weird. From that day on I have always wondered if they were experimenting on people by saying their labs were all fine, just to keep them sick. I know it sounds paranoid;but when so many people are really ill and nothing is coming up on tests it really makes you wonder.

  6. Dear Peeps and Friends, I always detested gym class - the ugly uniforms (pants - bleech!!) and the having to change in front of other girls (most kids are naturally modest). It's as if femininity / modesty were things the evolutionary-driven school-system wanted to stamp out. This was back in the early 70s.

    1. I wonder why they made us all change and dress in front of each other. My 8th grade junior high [the first year I left Catholic school, all made us shower in full view of each other after gym class, I still think this is sick and disgusting to this very day. At least by high school, there were some privacy stalls next to the giant shower room. I think they wanted modesty stamped out too. I wonder if schools have changed this since then?
