When You Learn So Much of the Population is Stupid and Evil.
I used to imagine when I was young that the world was a better place, and outside of my family, I would be free of horrible people. I did find some good people, don't get me wrong, but I remember being in my 20s, and learning the hard way how many narcissists and stupid people were the ones in charge. I think one of my biggest disappointments in life, was learning that narcissists were so high in number.
We don't know if Biden has won yet, I still worry Trump could steal it or use some machinations to get his way. Some liberals are too naive and don't realize that if both parties aren't acting in good faith, that trying to be "civil" and "play nice", is just one easier way to get screwed. This is an advantage the fascists of the world have used against the sane and reasonable people for all of world history.
This election should not be a close one. I started crying yesterday, the day after Election Day, that things were so close, that people had no problem voting for a monster that has allowed plague to be unleashed on us. Hundreds of millions of deaths hasn't even been enough to wake up these stupid people, they want more of the same. I definitely don't think Biden is perfect, my vote was a "survival vote", but to watch at least 48-49% of my own state vote for that piece of shit, even though my state came out blue by a thin margin, I can't even describe my utter disgust. I never was one to believe that most people are good, but my view of people has sunk even lower. How can they be so stupid? How can they want so much pain? How can they be so racist, and hate LBTGQ people and want everyone to be poorer living in the gutter?
I know for some society has gotten so complex and overwhelming, many are running to fantasy. I made that mistake in my own life broken down by poverty and illness to buy into the lies of Christianity when the fundies got their claws on me. In my case I never became a Republican, because I could not ignore the fact that the Republican answer for the disabled was go die in the gutter. These people join extreme churches that tell them Democrats equal baby killing Satanists [the prolife idiots ignore the fact birth control and stable wages lowers the abortion rate] and Republican equals God's party and they question none of them. These lemmings would run off a damn cliff if their pompadour haired lying pastors told them to and ARE.
America has a self-destruct button on it's back. This election proves it to me. Maybe it's the economic despair, maybe it's being tired from the go-go culture, but I wonder if some people are voting in such a way to bring the most death and destruction possible. One thing about narcissists and people without consciences, there's a point of psychopathy where they don't give a fuck about themselves either. They will make choices and do things to even destroy their own lives. Does this explain why people vote for those who directly harm them? Do they enjoy being hurt? Does this explain why inbred Kentucky voted for Moscow Mitch who denied even the poorest of them a stimulus to pay their rent when there's millions of unemployed people? What's wrong with these people? Were all those votes cooked too?
If Trump wins, I may be re-examining emigration. The barriers are so high. Maybe they really have "ruined everywhere". I want nothing to do with Republicans. We have crossed the line of civil disagreement because these people hate human rights, they support destruction and death. They have brought pandemic. They are directly destroying our lives. I broke out in tears, because there's so many stupid and awful people. Is this to say I am perfect no, but when people can watch a madman bring destruction and not even give a shit, this tells me something is very wrong. I feel like I am back in the house with my screaming abusive family but the house is my country.
This election has been extremely depressing. Half of the USA's population turn out to be foaming at the mouth Julius Streicher type Nazis. Even if Biden gets a win (due to votes being counted at least somewhat accurately) the Nazis are not going away.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what to do emigration-wise. Morris Berman claims to live safely in Mexico but I'm willing to bet he's sitting on a fat pension or two, book royalties, etc. and had a fairly beefy security force. We proles can't afford that. And as gringos we'd be targets, kidnappers assuming, perhaps rightly, that while we're poor we've got to have family/friends who can cough up *something*.
In my case I'm 30 years too late for emigration. It's fine to wetback it to France or somewhere in your 20s. Pick fruit for 10 years and keep your nose clean, and you can become a citizen.
I assume you're about my age, mid-late 50s, and are up against even more obstacles than I am. I'm at least fairly physically fit, and have to be or starve. I have to be able to do fairly physical work and put in an hour or two on the bike, often pulling a load, every day. The minute I can't, I'll be put out on the street and I know it.
I think about the best we can hope for is to find some corner of the US that's somewhat out of reach of the Nazi hordes. Elie Wiesel relates the horrors he went through and then says that another Jewish village, or schtetl, was so far back in the woods that the Nazis never got around to them and they coasted through the war just fine.
You say you have some German roots or connections, can you ally yourselves with the Amish/Mennonite community somehow?
To be continued DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNN........!!
Yes this election is depressing. Still no results and the fact it is close troubles me as it seems too handy for Trump to step in and steal it. Watching these people vote for more Covid is sickening. I agree even if Biden wins, these people are not going to go away. At this point I wish the country could just split in half, and the Jesusland fascist part could just go do their thing and the sane reasonable adults theirs. Sadly we are all mixed together.
DeleteI am not sure what to do emigration wise too. I am going from hard of hearing to very close to deaf, learning new languages would be impossible, english is hard enough!. Money wise just getting to a place would clean us out and I listed all those problems on a recent article.
I think those who are wealthy can get out and get a decent life, but apartment dwellers with no or few assets, disabled etc forget it. I get the feeling Morris Berman is wealthier, and probably can survive quite well in Mexico too. It's true that without wealth, one could be more prone to some dangers. I know someone who lives in Mexico, but they are a well-off college professor who is very fluent in the language. [the high IQ classmate I mentioned in the recent post about my high school class] Yeah you are in that place like me, should we stay or go? The paperwork is so ornerous. I am too disabled to even go the route of an alternative life in America, like intentional community, living in ultra remote area, etc. I have the feeling we are too old. In ones 50s it's simply too late, even if a person is healthy enough to work, the younger people are going to be hired.
continuing...
DeleteYeah a 20 something could pull it off. Medically I have too many needs too, lymph clinic, complex nebulized lung medicine, complex other meds having to do with kidneys, lupus related disorder--chose not to go on it yet but chances are I will have to in the future, etc etc. In foreign country I thought about this too, my body is so extreme, while a small town has gotten "used to me" this isn't going to be true in other parts of the world where I could be an object of curiosity, a walking "freaks" museum. I know some people have told me I pass for less weight but even 300lbs are rare in Europe, someone of my size is not going to pass unnoticed.
I've told husband I am too exhausted to do an emigration. He is less for it than me, seeing the barriers. We probably will be stuck here in fascist America. I suppose one option is trying to find as many like minded individuals in our respective areas, but Covid has put a damper on that. Yeah you are in better health and able to function and even then would be facing immense barriers. It's probably not going to happen, I'm stuck with the Nazis. My state did go blue, but it's borderline, I did consider moving to the northeast, but people in Maine, Mass, etc, I know told me their states were infected with Trumpsters too. I live in a place that already went blue so what would I solve?
Sorry to hear you are dependent on so much physical work. I know many are, and many older people who can no longer do physical jobs do end up in the streets, Disability is very hard to get. Now they will say if you can do "sit down work" tough go do that like there is sit down work all over. [I am so screwed up they know I can't even sit in the same place too long]
l wish I could figure out a liberal area where the Nazi hordes do not exist. one problem is many liberal places are more expensive even in my own state. I wish there was that corner. The Nazi Republicans have plenty of rural areas and small towns that back up their way of life and values, I wonder why liberals don't have the same? Neo-liberalism pushes the urban life, but what about those of us who don't fit into the wealth needed for that life?
I am German and Hungarian but with no contact from the family and more, there's no Amish connections. I knew of some Mennonites in my old rural town but they aren't really present here.
I agree about being able to find a corner, to "hide out in", sadly at least in my state that means Trumpster land, like my old rural town, and they have lost their minds. Wow I never knew of a Jewish village so remote it was never found, that's great. I almost want to look that up if it's I ever been written about. I find myself thinking where could a person be safe?
Where I was in a rural area they're all Nazis of course, but lots of people knew me and I was OK. Of course this is what Jews in Germany thought, who may have been in this or that small town for centuries, living amongst the same families who'd also been there for centuries. Until the powers-that-be say it's OK to kill Jews.
DeleteRight now I'm planning to move back to Hawaii as soon as I'm eligible for Social Security, so in as little as 3-4 years. It's half the cost of living as here, and if I'm going to die homeless in the street it might as we be in a place that's home to me.
I read enough autobiographies of Jews who went through WW2 and many point how how they lived peacefully with no problems in their small towns or villages and then after Hitler came in, the "former friends and neighbors" turned on them without any problem. One can easily see that stuff happening here in America. Just look how easily the Orange Sociopath made overt racism "fashionable" again. It was always there, but he allowed the pointy hoods to come out of the closet.
DeleteMaybe you should get on waiting lists for subsidized housing in Hawaii, wait the time out, you can do this from out of state, choose a good over 55/62 building, and get put on the lists. That would at least control the rent costs, though I know subsidized housing is not perfect it would cut down the rent overhead and make homelessness less possible. Yeah go to a place that feels like home.
Applying from "the mainland" would not fly at all. Hell, when I moved here to the Bay Area it was like meeting up with a brick wall until I wised up and got a local telephone number.
DeleteOh you can call and get put on waiting lists, they send you forms you mail back. It can be done long distance. That system works a bit different than private apartments.

Basically kind of sidled up to the Amish/Mennonite community or a variety thereof he called "Minimites" and they welcomed him and his wife just fine. Interestingly, after this experiment he moved to a large city and I believe worked as a bike messenger while his wife worked in a bakery or something, and he observed that their footprint on the Earth was smaller that way.
I actually thought you were in a rural area but I think I get you mixed up with Woodscolt or boob1234563947209457948983934.
I am dependent on tech [CPAP, nebulizer] to stay alive, but I think the people who can go off the grid, live remotely, off the land more, probably could survive far better. I am glad the Amish and Mennonites were kind to him. We have no Amish here, but I used to run across them in my old town, they used rented vans there to go to Walmart and this other local grocery store. They wouldn't interact, maybe they did with neighbors, I said hello to a few of the women. I was full fundie back then and dressed like a fundie so seems like I would not have been too intimidating. Oddly at the store they seemed to always have a lot of soda and candy in their shopping arts. So did he see the bigger city life as a smaller footprint, well having to get everything shipped in would be a bigger carbon footprint. I sometimes watch those Life under Zero show about the people in Alaska, and that seems to be a life, that costs a lot of money, how do they have all that gas for those chainsaws and other special equipment like tractors, carts, etc. I couldn't afford any of that crap, LOL in that case it seems weird to me because they all work like slaves to "live off the land" but then I think if the gasoline shipments shut down for their boat motors, tractors, etc, or parts break they are as screwed as the rest of us are. LOL I think about those weird logistics.
DeleteI saw one guy with one leg limping around and it seemed like he was just being a masochist not to go rent an apt in Anchorage. I never was one for physical labor or yard work. Parents put me to it. When young I could be on my feet too for hours at the restaurants and doing other crap, but my exhaustion started pretty young even before weight problems came. I live in what some would consider a rural area. It's really a small town but I live close to grocery store, gas stations. I have to live within 5 miles of a hospital due to my many medical problems though I have managed to only need the ER twice in my years here.
When I lived in "the rurals" (8 miles into town, kept chickens and sheep, grew a garden etc.) I spent about $150 a month on food and when I moved back to the city ... I spend about $150 a month on food.
DeleteWonder if some of the costs are from it being trucked in to the rural areas, you can fill the gaps with the homegrown stuff, but the costs go up that way while city is more centralized. Food skyrocketed here. it's bad. Part of it is my fault, going to expensive store, it's far smaller, less people, but I figure husband is safer going to the small grocery store of hundreds instead of the huge grocery stores like Walmart with thousands. So we are taking huge hits food wise. We used to spend 100 a week on food, around 50 bucks each, 200 a month for us, I guess then each. [I have some special dietary needs that affect the costs too] but I would say food has gone up 50-60 percent since Covid. I had him shopping buying 2 weeks at a time around 180-200 dollars worth of food [it's a pain in the ass too to always worry about a surplus in case things go pear shape] but even that amount went up recently. We had the veggie stands to cut down costs but they all just shut down.
DeleteYeah I guess I'm lucky to be in a city and a diverse one at that. I just picked up at least $20 worth of butter and cheese being thrown out behind the Korean market. I've been getting a lot of veggies from behind another place. I also gather "weeds" in season and as the rains start, I'm looking forward to gathering some greens.
DeleteI know what you mean, though, about avoiding crowds. I've also been going a bit more expensive on food to avoid crowded places.
Yeah the food is a lot cheaper at the crowded huge places but I figure husband is in enough risk at smaller one. Some say do delivery/curb pick up. I tried that, but everything was 8-14 days out. Maybe some super organized people can pull that off with giant pantries, but it didn't work. We tried to get a day and time too and never could. Too many are using it. Then it adds fees on top of the food costs, and you are watching money vaporize even faster. I think it's great you can got some free cheese and butter and veggies. Dumpster diving here would be hard, they lock everything up. I think it's a bit crazy how they put everything in trashcans that are all locked up with padlocks. Some of the dumpsters even have fences around them with padlocks. That's not good. Yeah I have to avoid crowds, and want him too as well.
DeleteOne thing that was ironic, is I was finally feel good about life before this Covid shit hit. Like I felt good and felt hey I may be poor and disabled, but I got my stamp club, UU, some decent medical resources, art center, things I ENJOYED. I can't get over the fact sometimes I "found a life" and then it feels like it got snatched away yet again.
ReplyDeleteBefore December 2019, I'd discovered there was good money to be made playing trumpet outside of Whole Foods. Like $40 or $50 an hour money. Then Christmas came so where I stood got covered with trees (although I probably could have moved or hell, a nice backdrop of trees...) and it got cold and I got sick with that coughing thing ... But the thing is, it was looking like I might be able to rent a small office to stealth live in and just pay attention to trumpet. Was contemplating an instructional book and a line of brass instrument cleaning products too. Welp, under lockdown I got to where I could play high C routinely etc., but that instrument is just too hard on my system. I'm seeing if I can get my singing voice really trained, and go from there.
DeleteWow that's good money for busking. Yeah you could have made a living or rent the small office. I feel like so much is ruined economically, people have no money now. Ebay is pretty dead. I tried selling a few paintings, ROCK BOTTOM cheap, I think I even had 25 bucks on a couple. it didn't work. I know art and stuff like that is being shunted to the bottom of the priority list. You probably wouldn't get the same money now. Everyone is so broke. I had to pay a bunch of medical bills, I have noticed they are getting more aggressive, like if you are a day late calling to bother you, writing final notice on a bill that isn't even that old where before you had time to pay. At least we are surviving in our case. I am surprised not see hordes of homeless people but I figure that's coming. Unemployment ends in Dec, the 6 month clock, is going to run out.
DeleteI'm really hoping that once I'm eligible for SS I can move back to Hawaii and "work the system" somehow. Minimum SS would be maybe $900 a month, high $800s I think, and rooms are all over for $400-$600 and that's just looking at Craig's List. The real way to find them is by knowing people, checking around the university etc.
DeleteSo, social security would make sure I have a roof over my head, and I'd only need a few hundred a month under-the-table to eat and buy odds and ends.
Yeah that's good if you can rent a room for that much, and yes universities would have the most rooms for rent. Yeah social security makes or breaks people being able to avoid homelessness. It seems Biden has won, I was in fear over the direct threats Trump was making to social security. Make sure to check on the age requirement too, I know it was raised a bit, though it may not apply to you. I forget what the cut off is.
DeleteDear Peeps, this covid is way over the top. Yes, if you have health issues, best to stay away from people. But for young healthy people, covid is more like a nasty flu, and not a reason to shut down the economy - condemning young people to years of poverty, poverty they may not be able to overcome. Young lives matter!
ReplyDeleteIt's far worse than the flu, Sue, I know a few who have gotten it, one almost died. I know of others who died and they weren't over 65 people but younger. The economy is too fragile, and well lets be frank, there's not enough job for people anymore. Capitalism was failing before this.
DeleteI'm pretty sure my mom and I got a piece of the Hong Kong flu on its last world tour in 1970. We were both very, very sick and this would have been a nonsmoking, nondrinking, not-too-overweight lady in her 30s in a warm sunny climate, with 6-year-old kid. And covid's worse than the hong kong flu. Time will tell how it stacks up against the 1918 flu.
DeleteAs for the economy, we've been heading for another Great Depression as it was. All the virus is doing is speeding up things that were already inked onto the schedule.
Yeah I've heard about Hong Kong flu, that sounds awful being so sick. I've heard of the swine flu too. Three years ago, I got sick a lot, they believe it's when UCTD came, I had something like 7 colds or flus every other month, it was getting scary. I think I may have wrote about it here. Covid's far worse and freaking me out because there seems to be no immunity after you have it for very long. We are going into a Great Depression, we probably are already there. I think Biden even being a corporate neo-liberal will have to ponder a UBI system, because the job systems is toast, and with this many unemployed people, they are looking at full societal collapse. Unemployment is going to clock out very soon in many states. I do think there could be a full economic "collapse" that makes 2008 look like nothing and it probably will be worldwide. The economy was bad before all of this began. I saw all the abandoned houses and stores and rot before then.
