ReplyDeleteIt's partly due to the Patriot Act (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Act) and additions to the National Defense Authorization Act (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Defense_Authorization_Act), but you probably knew that.
It authorizes the federal government to detain individuals suspected of being terrorists and is thought by many scholars to be unconstitutional (read half way down where it says "United States": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indefinite_detention). Read the part in that section that says "The amendments to effectively ban indefinite detention of US Citizens were defeated in both chambers" in that Wikipedia article.
You will notice Chris Hedges is listed in that article too as one of the voices opposing it.
Unless the Supreme Court can rule that it is unconstitutional, we will be living with this for a very long time. Very sad.
Yes I wrote against NDAA and Patriot Act for years warning people how it could be used one day buy a despot, and well it's happening. Now you can just be peacefully protesting and be thrown into a van and into a black box prison. I have noticed the right wingers have been taught to hate protesters. "they are violent and looting" they don't even give a damn that their first amendment rights have been vanquished. Chris Hedges has warned of collapse and bad things to come. It is unconstitional. DeleteI'm skeeved out by people who complain about looters, instead of the killing cops who started all this. Trump's jackboots caused more violence then they solved. I know Trump is using the "scare" people for "law and order" [probably with tons of agent proveceurs and jackboot helpers from Erik Prince and pals] just like the Nazis did.
