Box Turtles

When I was a kid, I had several box turtles as pets, usually they were temporary pets as we returned them to the wild [well the woods in the park down the street from my house]. Do people see box turtles anymore? I do think they are diminishing in numbers. I have an interest in box turtles and if I did not live in an apartment and had a yard, I would get a box turtle garden though I would have to find out how they winter them. For now, my interests are in conservation groups regarding them and seeing the ones at the local nature center.

  1. I live in a rural area in TN and I have had several box turtles cross my front or back yard in the years past, even last year but I haven't seen the first one this year. I've also noticed that the hummingbirds are nearly non existent here this summer. I always put out a feeder and in summers past they'd have it emptied out within 2 weeks. I filled the feeder up in late spring and never saw but maybe 1 or 2 hummers and finally had to change out the sugar water because it sat out in the hot sun so long I'm sure it fermented. And the changed out one is still out there a month later barely touched. I've also noticed that toad frogs have greatly diminished everywhere. I see one in our yard only very occasionally, always an adult never the little different colored babies I used to catch everywhere as a child. I miss the nature part of those times, it was so much nicer plus it was my escape world from Narcopath Junction.

    1. Sorry you haven't seen any box turtles this year. I have never seen one where I live, but in the states where I grew up where I saw tons of them. I wonder what happened to the humming birds :/ ? I heard the amphibians are under immense pressure, the frogs and toads, I hope they come back. I haven't seen a frog in years outside the ones in a cage at the nature center come to think of it but don't have much mobility to go deep into the woods. I seriously worry about the decline of the nature. It was an escape too for me from the narcs.

  2. Speaking of nature and our love for it, I think God speaks to us sometimes through nature, don't you? I had something very interesting happen this week. I pray to Jesus most every night before going to sleep (and cry myself to sleep often). I prayed to him one night telling Him how lonely I was except for the precious people (like you and Mr and Mrs Smakintosh) online, that I had absolutely nobody who understood or wants to hear about what has happened with the narc situation. My husband listened to me for a while but he has gotten tired of hearing about it. Anyway, I was just telling Jesus how lonely I am and I wish He could just give me a hug like my grandmother used to, or show me some kind of little sign, any sign so that I don't feel so alone. The very next day, it was afternoon and I opened the front door to go to the mailbox. Looked down and there was a strange looking bird just sitting their on my "Bless this Home" door mat. He just sat there and looked at me and wasn't scared. He looked like some kind of tropical bird. I reached down and stuck my index finger under his breast like u would a parakeet and he hopped right onto my finger and I brought him inside. My grandmother left me some bird books and I looked him up and he was a Yellow billed Cuckoo. I read that it's very rare to see one up close. I took some cell pics of him and took him out front to a crepe myrtle tree and set him on a limb. He stayed in the crepe myrtle all day even though he could clearly fly (he flew from limb to limb in the tree). Finally late in the evening he was gone but left me a feather which I put in my Bible. I later read online that seeing a Yellow billed Cuckoo is a sign of a new fate.

    1. I do believe God will send answers to prayers like that. So glad you had the little bird sent you. Seeing such a rare bird like that definitely sounds God-sent and with the timing. I prayed about going NC and for God to show me what I was supposed to do in proceeding and next day was in a used book store and found money in a book that had an important to me personally bible verse written on one of the 10 dollar bills. So I definitely believe these things will happen. That is so cool you were able to bring him in and take pictures. One thing too, I had a dream the day before my mother showed up, warning me of what was to happen. In the dream I was hiding behind a bush and got the message "Don't let her in" within the dream. I even talked about this dream with a friend the day it happened and next day my mother showed up. I am sorry you are so alone. I was praying last night and asking God to give me rest and less worries. I really now only have my 2 college friends who live long distance, and my husband and online friends. So yes I understand. Yes I have "nice" acquaintances in my community but after having my butt burned majorly socially I am not doing well. I was praying to God about these issues too. I have needed God's comfort many times too. I will keep praying for you and glad God sent you that little birdie. Nature for me is a place of comfort and solace. It is one reason I go to the nature center so often, and sit out in it when I can. God bless you Freespirit.

    2. Oh I consider my husband's best friend a friend to me too, he is there for us as well but yes, there can be deep pain with what we have experienced. I will pray too God sends you more people who understand. I have realized outside my very close friendship circles, that I cannot share these narcissistic realities. I lost a friend who refused to understand. I used to say know someone for 2 years at least before sharing these personal things, well change that to 5-10 years and only fellow abuse victims often will "get it". I made a major mistake sharing this blog with a local friend I believed was close.

  3. Thankyou Peep for praying for me. I can use all the prayers I can get. I've also been praying for you as well. God bless you too and thank you for your website and the work you do. I believe you will be rewarded someday.
